Mates Of State

Song: Get Better
Artist: Mates Of State
Album: Re-Arrange Us

The Mates Of State have a unique sound, and this is a very unique song. Though the lyrics seem to not make much sense, that is what makes it seem so whimsical. The Mates Of State we introduced to me by my best friend who told me to listen to it, and to watch the music video.

The Mates Of State are from San Fransisco and are made up of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel. On matesofstate.com they answered a frequently asked question;

  • What is it like being married and playing music together?
Probably, exactly how you imagine it would be.

There aren't many bands that are couples, The White Stripes are the only band that I can think of, but the rumors may not be true. So when I read that they were a couple I thought of how amazing the Mates Of State vocals flow together, and how strange it is that two people who have voices that seem to work so well end up married, it seems like a slim chance if you ask me

The video is by far my favorite part, it shows a scene of a party that is being set up by many people, but everyone is wearing animal masks. At the very end a "bear" walks in and, well. watch it for your self.

Another thing that is a little off subject but I thought was neat, is that they posed for the Peta2 ad, you must know it by now. The " I'd rather go naked than wear fur" ad. Yay for Mates Of State!

Here's the music video, Enjoy.

Friendly Fires

Song: Skeleton Boy
Artist: Friendly Fires
Album: Friendly Fires

The Friendly Fires have become one of my favorite bands. With songs like Jump In The Pool and Paris they give of a young and energetic feel. A while back their new music video for Skeleton Boy was on iTunes' free music of the week, and after watching the music video on YouTube i decided to download it.

In the music video they start off in just black jump suits, but as the song progresses snow whirls around them and their black jump suits start to take on the appearance of a skeleton. It is such a fun music video, and the effects are quite cool to watch.
Heres the link for the music video! Enjoy.

Breathe Carolina

Song: Gossip
Artist: Breathe Carolina
Album: It's Classy, Not Classic

This song is a bit different from my last post on the Wombats. This song mixes techno, screamo and something else that I don't have a name for. Wikipedia describes their genre Post-Hardcore,Electro. I don't no what post-hardcore means but Electro makes sense.
Breathe Carolina is from Denver,Colorado and is composed of Kyle Even and David Schmitt. They recorded their first album on Garageband and started off as a Myspace band. They have now been on tours with bands such as Cute Is What We Aim For, Jeffree Star, Cash Cash and are also on the Vans Warped Tour.
They do not have a music video for this, at least not one that I can find. So I listened to a fan made video on YouTube. The first time I listened to it I thought it was a little hard, with the few screaming bits and all, but it grew on my and I consider it a good song.

The Wombats

Song: Lets Dance To Joy Division
Artist: The Wombats
Album: A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation

A friend of mine told me after he listened to it that it was "Very English".
I might have to agree, the Wombats are a band that are from Liverpool and started off in 2003 under Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute Of Preforming Arts. By 2005 they had seven EP's and got signed with KIDS label.

Although I sure they aren't big in the US they have hit it off in the UK, preforming at many festivals.

The way I find most of the music that I listen to is by random YouTubeing. I found out about the Wombats after I did a report on wombats [the animals] for science class, I then went to YouTube and typed in wombats, and what do you know! I found a great band.

If you get a chance to see the music video for this song its quite funny, with their play on Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Click the link below to watch it.
-tell me what you think of the song, as well as the post.

Introduction

I think there is something to be said about people who can write lyrics about anything, whether it be personal or not, and put it out to the world, accepting that they will here criticism for every word they write. Just as important as the people who come up with lyrics are the actual singers. They constantly take hits from listeners who hate their sound, but at the same time are another one person's idol. This blog is not about mainstream music that everyone knows and already has an opinion, this blog is about music that may be new to your ears and in my mind is great.
